The city of Durango, despite being in the top 20 of the safest cities in the country, is one of the worst rated in terms of corruption, ranked seventh only above Tlanepantla, Acapulco, Los Mochis, Cuernavaca, Uruapan and Tijuana.
The National Survey of Public Safety in Urban Areas conducted in the 92 largest cities in the country revealed that 14.2 percent of its citizens aged 18 or older had contact, in the first half of this year, with some Public Safety authority.
Of that 14 percent, the sample was taken to see how many of them had suffered an act of corruption and at the national level it was 47.5 percent of people aged 18 or older who suffered at least one act of corruption by public safety personnel.
The Comarca Lagunera, made up of Lerdo, Gómez Palacio and Torreón, remained slightly above the national average with 47.9 percent, but an acceptable rating.
However, in the city of Durango, of the 14.2 percent of those aged 18 or older who had contact with a public security authority, 61.6 percent said they had suffered an act of corruption.
Of the 92 cities evaluated, Durango was the seventh with the highest percentage of corruption, and was only surpassed by Los Mochis, Sinaloa with 62; Cuernavaca, Morelos with 63.4; Uruapan, Michoacán with 67.3; Tlanepantla, State of Mexico with 71.2; Acapulco, Guerrero with 74.1 and Tijuana, Baja California with 79.2 percent.
Experienced conflicts
Another outstanding fact from this national survey indicates that, in the city of Durango, in the second quarter of the year, 33.1 percent of all inhabitants aged 18 or older experienced some conflict or confrontation within their city.
The city of Durango maintained its average below the national average, which was 36.7 percent in this same category, but grew compared to the data from the first quarter of the year, which was 26.5 percent of Durango residents aged 18 or older who had some social conflict.
These social conflicts referred to in the National Survey of Public Safety in Urban Areas, the greatest of them is theft, followed by garbage thrown or burned, problems in parking lots, problems with domestic animals or gossip and/or misunderstandings, as the five main causes.
Sexual harassment or violence
The National Survey of Public Safety in Urban Areas also reports that, during the first half of 2024, it is estimated that 17.1 percent of people aged 18 and over in urban areas were victims of at least one type of harassment and/or sexual violence in public places.
This estimate represents a change compared to the second half of 2023, which was 15.5 percent, which means that this year the number of victims of sexual harassment and/or violence in public places increased.
The most common forms of harassment and sexual violence reported by victims are rude and sexually motivated compliments, especially for women; messages or posts on social media with sexual innuendos; messages, photographs or videos sent directly via WhatsApp with sexual content or innuendos.
There are also reports of people who showed their private parts in public or touched them in front of the harassed person and, in fifth place, among the five most important, that the victim was groped, touched or kissed for sexual purposes.
