CANANEA, SONORA, 08/14/2023.- Nombre de Dios in Durango joined the Magical Towns program on October 11, 2018.
This place has indeed a kind of magic, with its walls and 15th Century buildings telling its story.
The Franciscan priest named Fray Gerónimo de Mendoza founded the mission and celebrated the first mass in the name of God and thus the municipality was named “Nombre de Dios” (Name of God). It is the oldest town in the state of Durango, founded as a Spanish town in the 15th century.
Originally it was called Villa de los Cuatro Templos (“Village of the four temples”), forming part of the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, Nombre de Dios has been considered a Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
A visit to Nombre de Dios is like entering a world full of history and mysticism, the architectural richness of its temples, has remained intact through the centuries, such as the temple of San Pedro Apóstol, which was completed in 1790, conserving its original façade this day.
The Chapel of Our Lady of the Nativity (Nuestra Señora de la Natividad) stands out for its neo-Gothic style.
It is said that Gothic architecture began with the Basilica of Saint-Denis, in Paris, in 1140, and ended with the wonderful Chapel of Henry VII in Westminster, at the beginning of the 16th century.
Inside the Chapel of Our Lady of the Nativity, there is the oldest image of the Virgen de la Soledad in the state of Durango and in the north of Zacatecas, just as the Temple of Jesús Nazareno dates from the 17th century, whose façade is the oldest in the whole state of Durango.
This temple holds the Christ of the Good Death (El Cristo de la Buena Muerte), the Tree of Life (El árbol de la vida), and the figure of Santiago the Apostle, to whom the faithful give clothes as gifts.
Its gastronomy is famous for the traditional gorditas stuffed with a variety of stews, Durango mezcal, craft beer, fruit wines, crystallized sweets, grilled cheeses, nopales, chili peppers, and preserves.
It is located to the southwest in the state of Durango, bordered to the north by Durango and Poanas, to the south by Mezquital and Súchil, and to the east by Vicente Guerrero, Mezquital, and Durango.
Among its attractions are: Paraje los Salones Spa, Ojo de Agua de San Juan Spa, Los Berros Community, the former convent of San Francisco, San Quintín Spa Hacienda, Amado Nervo Church, Nixtalpan Whereabouts.
The festival where they celebrate the founding of their city is on September 30, as other festivities. – “Taquito de San José”, March 19, Festival of the Ojo de Agua de San Juan, June 24, Celebration of the day of San Pedro Apóstol, June 29, Festival of the community of Lumbreras, August 7 and Fiesta a the Virgin of Guadalupe, December 12.
