Health authorities confirm the presence of fungus in infections by aseptic meningitis in Durango

The outbreak of aseptic meningitis in Durango, Mexico, affecting 40 women and one man and causing three deaths, was caused by a fungus, as confirmed by Durango State Secretary of Health, Irasema Kondo.


The official declared that the patients are to undergo immediate treatment and integral attention to the families must be kept up. She added that the results of various laboratories in the health sector and the National Institute of Medical Sciences and Nutrition “Salvador Zubirán”, coincided in the presence of a fungus in all cases, and is awaiting confirmation of the results of the Institute of Diagnosis and Epidemiological Reference.

Confirmed cases have remained at 41 and so far have not increased.
