Through its official social media channels, the Minor Basilica Cathedral of Durango announced a call for applications to form its Cathedral Choir, an initiative that seeks to strengthen liturgical life through the performance of sacred music, in accordance with Church tradition.
The invitation is extended to women and men with a passion for sacred and liturgical music, as well as a willingness to serve and a commitment to the community. According to the information released, the project aims to enrich the celebrations of divine worship through music, understood as an essential element of the liturgy.
The Cathedral explains that sacred music is that created specifically for the celebration of worship, and is distinguished by its qualities of holiness, beauty, and universality, as established in the document Tra le sollecitudini. In this sense, it is emphasized that it must exclude all that is profane, not only in its content but also in the manner of its performance, and is a true art capable of elevating the spirit of the faithful.
Under this concept, the Cathedral Choir will perform various genres of sacred music, including Gregorian chant, ancient and modern sacred polyphony, organ music and music for other instruments permitted in the liturgy, as well as sacred folk songs of a liturgical and religious nature.
Requirements for joining the choir include being 15 years of age or older, having good pitch and the ability to sing in a group, availability to attend weekly rehearsals and liturgical celebrations, and a responsible, respectful, and committed attitude. A willingness to receive ongoing vocal and liturgical training is also essential.
The Durango Cathedral stated that those who join the choir will receive musical and liturgical training in accordance with Church tradition, and will also participate in a space for spiritual, artistic, and community growth.
