Durango will have a ‘Megarecycling event’ with a tree exchange; when and at what time?

Durango will host a “Mega Recycling Marathon,” where residents can bring all the electronic waste they have in their homes. Among the recycling marathons held this year, the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment (SRNyMA) reports the collection of more than 35 tons of electronic waste.

The head of the agency, Claudia Hernández Espino, explained that this activity aims to raise awareness among the population so they understand that this type of waste cannot be disposed of as conventional garbage and must be properly disposed of.

“It is estimated that Mexicans generate more than 9 kilos of electronic waste per year, and if we consider that the state of Durango has just over 1.8 million inhabitants, we would be talking about around 16.5 million kilos of electronic waste generated annually,” she stated.

When and what time?

People can arrive directly in their vehicles without having to get out, as a drive-through option will be available. In addition, saplings will be exchanged and prizes, such as stays in the cabins of El Tecuán Ecological Park, will be raffled off.

The event is scheduled for Saturday, June 6, at Plaza IV Centenario; it will begin at 12:00 p.m. and conclude at 7:00 p.m.

The agency reported that all the trash collected during this activity is delivered to the company Sitcam, with which it has an agreement to guarantee its proper final disposal. Batteries are transported to an authorized disposal site in Nuevo León.

Addressing concerns about potential revenue generated by the recycling drives, the official clarified that they do not represent any business for the agency.

“This is in no way a business; it simply seeks to give this waste proper management. It’s important to remember that these are special handling wastes that require compliance with certain regulations,” she stated.

She assured that the goal is to help the community have a nearby location to properly dispose of these types of materials.

As part of the agreement with the company in charge of waste management, the agency receives some in-kind support, such as stationery, cleaning supplies, and other materials, which they say are largely symbolic.

Among the activities scheduled from June 1st to Sunday the 6th for Environment Week, in the context of World Environment Day commemorated on June 5th, workshops, talks, conferences, and various recreational activities will be offered.

Hernández Espino explained that this year’s theme focuses on a call to climate action. In addition, two keynote addresses will be presented: one by Christian Wehenkel (ISIMA-UJED), on Mexican forests in the face of climate change.

“That talk will be held on June 3rd at 10:00 a.m. in the Secretariat’s auditorium,” he stated.

Also, next Friday, Dr. Jorge Servín Martínez, leader of the reintroduction project for this species in the Sierra Madre Occidental of Durango, will give a talk entitled “Reintroduction of the Mexican Gray Wolf to the Wild.”

Finally, he noted that an Environmental Fair will be held on Saturday, June 6, in Plaza Fundadores, featuring various activities for the whole family.
