Municipality of Gómez Palacio rescues and releases wildlife

In an effort to preserve regional biodiversity, the Department of Ecology and Environmental Protection of Gómez Palacio released a northern opossum and a turkey vulture after they received specialized medical care and a rehabilitation process.

The vulture’s case was particularly noteworthy due to its condition, as it was rescued with the loss of one of its legs; however, after clinical treatment and a period of observation, it recovered the necessary conditions to survive in its natural habitat.

Both birds were evaluated by veterinarian Fernando Morales Soto, certified by the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (PROFEPA), who determined their suitability for life in the wild.

Jorge Luis Valadez Moreno, head of the municipal department, emphasized that these actions reflect the municipal administration’s commitment to protecting the environment and wildlife.

He explained that the opossum acts as a natural pest controller, while the turkey vulture helps prevent diseases by feeding on decaying matter, making both species essential for ecological balance.

Finally, the city council called on citizens to report injured or at-risk wild animals, in order to provide them with timely care.
