The “Emerald Zone” program will allow women to call for help or activate 911 from these stores.
More than 400 OXXO stores in Durango will become support spaces for women facing dangerous situations, as part of the “Emerald Zone” program.
The strategy stems from an agreement signed between the State Government, the Durango City Council, the Public Security Secretariat, and the State Women’s Institute, with the goal of expanding the network of safe spaces in the state.
The agreement was led by Governor Esteban Villegas Villarreal and Mayor Toño Ochoa, who stated that the idea is for these stores to function as immediate shelters for women, girls, and adolescents who need help.
The stores participating in the program will be identified with the “Emerald Zone” sign, and their staff will be able to assist in activating a 911 call or provide support until authorities arrive.
According to state authorities, the program also aims to strengthen the prevention of gender-based violence through coordination between public agencies and the private sector.
The retail chain’s participation is part of the corporate social responsibility initiatives promoted by FEMSA, which will make its network of stores available to expand safe spaces in different areas of the state.
With this strategy, Durango seeks to create a network of accessible support points for women who may face risky situations in public spaces.
