The native plant that abounds in Durango and is medicinal, do you know it?

Among the plant species found in Durango, scrublands are not the most abundant; according to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), that position is held by the pines in the forested areas.

However, they are probably the most easily accessible, as scrublands tend to occur not only in their own ecosystems but also in extensive transition zones to other types of regions.

And there is a special scrubland that, for centuries, has been a fundamental part of Mexican herbal medicine, and is accessible to almost everyone.

What is the native medicinal plant that is accessible to almost everyone?

In addition to being one of the most abundant, “la gobernadora” (the governor’s plant) is a native plant of Durango that has medicinal functions. So much so that the National Institute of Statistics and Geography itself classifies it as such in the Compendium of Geographical Aspects of this state. Its name is no coincidence, as its natural properties allow it to inhibit the growth of other plants around it, allowing it to survive, as it doesn’t have to share water with them.

What are the properties of “la gobernadora,” a medicinal plant native to Durango?

According to herbal experts, “la gobernadora” has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties, allowing it to be used for conditions such as stomach pain, respiratory problems, fever, and even menstrual pain.

Identifying a “gobernadora” is relatively simple, especially during its flowering season, as its yellow flowers tend to be particularly striking in semi-desert environments.

They have small leaves and a texture known as “corácea,” resembling leather; it also has an odor similar to “tar” or “chapopote,” although less intense.

How is “la gobernadora” prepared for medicinal purposes?

According to herbal experts, the governor’s herb can be prepared as a tea by boiling water and flowers in water, then drinking it as an infusion; about a tablespoon of the herb is required per cup.

Some others prepare it at a concentration for “medicinal baths,” claiming it has beneficial effects on skin care.
