Due to the richness of water provided by the rivers that flow through Durango, there are areas rich in the production of various fruits, such as walnuts.

This river is one of the most important in the Comarca Lagunera region, as its tributary sustains agricultural, fruit-growing, and livestock activities.

Durango River Irrigating a Significant Area of Walnut Groves

This Durango river is the Nazas, which irrigates a large area of walnut groves in the Comarca Lagunera region, and whose production is one of the most important in the country, due to the yield per hectare.

The Nazas River rises in the high part of the Sierra Madre Occidental, east of the mountain shadow. Before the construction of the dams, it flowed into Laguna de Mayrán, in Coahuila, after traveling almost 600 kilometers.

Currently, this river is artificially blocked by the Lázaro Cárdenas (El Palmito) dam, a catchment dam, and the Francisco Zarco (Las Tórtolas) dam, a diversion and regulating dam.

This is the municipality that benefits the Nazas River from walnut production.

One of the municipalities that has benefited the most from the Nazas River is the municipality of Nazas, which has the highest walnut production in the entire Comarca Lagunera region.

This municipality has approximately 11,500 hectares of walnut trees, with a production of up to 1.7 tons per hectare, according to the state Secretariat of Agriculture and Rural Development.
