The Governor of Durango, Esteban Villegas Villarreal, expressed his gratitude to the President of the Republic, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, for the start of operations of the Guadalupe Victoria Water Treatment Plant.
“From the heart and soul, the people of Durango thank you for this important start,” he stated upon inaugurating this essential project for the supply of drinking water.

Water Supply Guaranteed

Accompanied by Efraín Morales López, Director General of the National Water Commission (CONAGUA), the governor pressed the button that activated the filling system of the twin tanks, beginning the water purification process. This will guarantee a supply of up to 1,100 liters per second for the state capital.
He emphasized that, after years of effort and management, this project was finally completed thanks to the negotiation of the water rights for the Guadalupe Victoria Dam, which allowed for the approval of the plant. Furthermore, as part of this comprehensive water plan, the closure of 29 wells was announced to provide relief to the region’s groundwater.
Efraín Morales López recalled that this March 25th marks the fulfillment of President Sheinbaum’s commitment during her last visit to Durango.

The Beneficiaries

The new water treatment plant will initially benefit more than 200,000 residents, with plans to expand its coverage to 300,000. This project is part of a national water strategy developed in collaboration with the state government.
Likewise, the director of CONAGUA reported that construction of the Tunal II Dam will soon begin, with an investment of 3.8 billion pesos and a two-year construction period.
This infrastructure will guarantee the supply of drinking water for Durango for the next 50 years. In addition, progress is being made on the modernization of irrigation district 017, which will benefit producers in Durango and Coahuila, and on the creation of a master plan for new projects in 2025 that will expand coverage of the human right to water in all municipalities of the state.

Stabilization Phase

Currently, the plant is in the stabilization and verification phase to ensure that the water meets the highest quality standards.
The supply of water free of harmful minerals such as arsenic and fluoride to the twin tanks is expected to begin on April 10.
“Durango can say that there will be water for the next 50 years,” concluded Governor Esteban Villegas, highlighting the progress toward a water sustainability model that will improve the quality of life for thousands of families in the state.
Present at the inauguration and the tour of the facilities were Felipe Zataráin Mendoza, Deputy Director General of Drinking Water, Drainage, and Sanitation at CONAGUA; Yadira Graciela Narváez Salas, general director of the State Water Commission, among other officials.
