The lack of aircraft nationwide is affecting the ability to increase flight frequencies in Durango, explained the Secretary of Tourism, Elisa Haro Ruiz. Airlines are facing a shortage of aircraft, since many are undergoing maintenance, as is the case of the company Volaris, which has 40 percent of the planes under review.
According to the state official, this maintenance process can extend up to 12 months, due to the limited availability of companies that carry out preventive work, which complicates the possibility of the planes being reactivated promptly.
She emphasized that the government of Durango has expressed its interest in being considered to receive more flight frequencies once the planes are available, especially with the recent remodeling and expansion of the Guadalupe Victoria airport, and taking into account that new investments in the region require greater air connectivity, which will impact both the tourism and economic sectors.
Flights with high costs
The secretary mentioned that an additional factor that is affecting Durango’s connectivity is the high cost of plane tickets. She pointed out that, in some cases, traveling to Durango is more expensive than flying to international destinations such as Madrid from Mexico City. This situation makes it difficult to promote vacation packages and attract tourists to the capital of Durango.
Currently, Aeroméxico operates five daily flights to Durango, but prices remain high. Haro Ruiz indicated that they are in talks with other airlines to find solutions that stabilize prices and increase the supply of flights, particularly to Mexico City. Volaris, which already operates two daily flights from Durango to Tijuana and Chicago, could be a viable alternative to expand connectivity, with the possibility of establishing a new route to the Felipe Ángeles International Airport.
