The National Meteorological Service predicts that snowfall will prevail in these and other states

The first snowfalls at the end of the year in Mexico surprised residents of several states in northern Mexico. Among the entities where snow fell are Durango and Zacatecas.

Highways in both states were covered in white and in some cases weather conditions forced them to be closed in sections, for the safety of motorists. Such was the case of the Durango-Villa Unión highway.

The National Guard reported that the Lázaro Cárdenas-Villa Unión section was closed due to snowfall and crystallization of the road. In this sense, he urged drivers to drive with caution and reduce their speed to avoid accidents.

A second road section closed, according to Federal Roads and Bridges (Capufe), is the Durango – Mazatlán highway due to falling snow. The blockade goes both ways.

“For the safety of users, the Durango Toll Plaza will remain closed in direstion to Mazatlán and the Coscomate Collection Plaza in direction to Durango. Take your precautions,” the agency published on the night of November 22.

In which areas of Durango and Zacatecas did snow fall?

In the morning, Civl Protection reported that there was snowfall in 15 communities in 3 municipalities (10 in Guanaceví, 4 in Tepehuanes and 1 in Tamazula). In addition, they reported that during the rest of the day conditions for light rain would persist in 11 municipalities.

While in Zacatecas, snowfall was recorded in the mountain area. Two more entities with similar weather conditions are Coahuila and Chihuahua.

The National Meteorological Service (SMN) reported that low temperatures will persist. In its latest report it indicated that in the mountains of Chihuahua, Durango, Sonora and Zacatecas they are expected to reach a range of -10 to -5 degrees.

In addition, the first winter storm is expected to be located over the Mesa del Norte, so snow and sleet is forecast in the mountains of Chihuahua, Coahuila, Durango, Nuevo León, San Luis Potosí, Sinaloa, Tamaulipas and Zacatecas.

Very heavy rains are also expected in Aguascalientes, Coahuila, Durango, Nuevo León, San Luis Potosí and Zacatecas and intervals of showers in Chihuahua.

In this sense, the Civil Protection units urged extreme precautions in the face of low temperatures, to prevent respiratory diseases, especially in children, older adults and people with some medical condition.
