The governor assured that the deployment of naval personnel is part of operational movements and, so far, ruled out an alarming situation in the state.

The presence of personnel from the Mexican Navy Secretariat in Durango is part of operational movements linked to the Federal Government’s security strategy and, so far, does not represent an alarming situation for the state, Governor Esteban Villegas Villarreal said.

The governor explained that some naval personnel are temporarily remaining in the state because some members are in transit to other locations, particularly Mazatlán, Sinaloa, where they are carrying out various operational activities.

“It’s calm, relax, there is nothing happening in Durango,” Villegas said when questioned about the recent presence of Navy personnel.

The governor explained that the deployment of federal forces responds to a strategy that concentrates a greater number of personnel in regions where greater security problems are occurring.

In this context, he considered it positive that more federal personnel arrive in Durango, given the state’s large territory and the difficulties involved in maintaining permanent coverage throughout all of its regions.

“For me, it would be excellent if they stayed and sent more people, because Durango is enormous and it is difficult to cover it completely,” he said.

Villegas added that, so far, the presence of the Navy has not been considered an extraordinary situation during the security meetings involving state and federal authorities.

Regarding the clashes reported in the border area between Durango, Sinaloa, and Chihuahua, the governor said they involve a dispute between groups and assured that authorities are maintaining an operation to prevent the population from becoming involved.

“It is an issue between the groups themselves,” he said.

He explained that both the Federal Government and state authorities have personnel deployed in the region to preserve public safety and make progress in locating and arresting those responsible for the violent incidents.

The governor said coordination among the various security agencies will continue in areas where surveillance needs to be reinforced, particularly in mountainous regions and areas bordering other states.

Villegas reiterated that Durango is willing to receive greater support from federal security forces, considering that the state’s vast territory makes it necessary to maintain a constant presence at strategic points.
