Health authorities from Sanitary Jurisdiction Number 2, based in Gómez Palacio, have reported five confirmed cases and three tragic fatalities linked to rickettsiosis across the Laguna Region of Durango.
According to public health reports, the infections are primarily concentrated in the municipalities of Gómez Palacio and Cuencamé. The outbreak has disproportionately affected women and young children, with pediatric patients aged 5 to 9 years old representing a particularly vulnerable high-risk group. Additionally, health officials revealed that roughly 15 suspect cases are currently undergoing laboratory evaluation.
Prevention and Warning Signs
Dr. Pedro Antonio Facio Torres, head of the Sanitary Jurisdiction, emphasized that the primary factor contributing to the fatalities has been delayed medical intervention. Because the early symptoms of rickettsia—including fever, severe headaches, fatigue, and body aches—closely resemble common illnesses like dengue, diagnosis is frequently delayed unless patients explicitly report potential exposure or tick bites.
In response to the outbreak, health officials have urged residents to implement strict preventative measures at home:
Pet Care: Ensure dogs and cats receive regular anti-tick treatments and prevent pets from roaming freely outdoors.
Prompt Medical Evaluation: Visit a clinic or hospital immediately upon the onset of fever, making sure to inform healthcare providers of any contact with pets or ticks.
Symptom Awareness: Watch closely for characteristic skin lesions, which often appear as a central dot surrounded by a pale ring and a red outer border.
