Mexico is second in the world in child sex tourism and it is estimated that more than 20,000 girls and boys are victims of sex tourism and prostitution, warned Senator Verónica Delgadillo García. For this reason, he proposed to reform and add article 116 of the General Law on the Rights of Girls, Boys, and Adolescents, and his initiative was turned over to the United Commissions for the Rights of Children and Adolescents, and Legislative Studies.
The legislator of the Parliamentary Group of the Citizen Movement considered the figures are terrifying, but the reality is much worse. “Unfortunately, Mexico has been considered and identified as a popular destination for sex tourism, and like the vast majority of crimes in the country, these are hardly reported for reasons of fear, public exposure, stigmatization, due to the permanent mistrust in the authorities in charge of investigating and administering justice, and even due to the lack of accessible and safe mechanisms to report them ”.
Delgadillo García questioned the future that is being built if minors are being violated, abused and exploited, when they should be playing, learning, growing and preparing to be the future of the country.
She indicated that Mexico is fully obliged to protect the rights of infants, in particular, to ensure the best interests of children, being a clear example of the international commitments that are had, as is the case of the Convention on the Rights of the Child and its Protocol on the Sale of Children, Child Prostitution and the Use of Children in Pornography.
The senator assured that data from the National System for the Comprehensive Protection of Girls, Boys, and Adolescents indicate that in 2018 2 thousand 908 homicides against infants were reported, there is a 305 percent increase in sexual abuse against children under five years of age and prevails an incidence in child pornography and sex tourism.
