Mexico, at risk of not being a priority for Biden for failing to recognize him as the new President, experts say

The presidents of Mexico, Russia, and Brazil are the only ones who have not recognized the triumph of Joe Biden in the United States elections. This “diplomatic stumble” could generate some inconvenience in the first 100 days of the Democratic administration, experts agreed.

” What Mexico is missing in not recognizing President Biden is the opportunity to be among the first priorities of his administration, ” said Iván Zapién, a partner at the firm Hogan Lovells.

He added that, in a situation as complex as the one currently experienced in the world, the countries that timely recognized the victory of the Democrat did so in order to have a good diplomatic relationship with the largest economy in the world, and not doing so takes away the opportunity to be a priority during the transition process between Donald Trump and Biden.

Meanwhile, Juan Francisco Torres Landa, partner at the firm Hogan Lovells, pointed out that he knows from a good source that Marcelo Ebrard’s team from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is already coordinating with Joe Biden’s transition team, but they have to do it ‘under the radar’ because President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has not yet recognized his triumph, which only generates operational delays.

“In the past, Ebrard had an enormous closeness to the Hillary Clinton campaign, and perhaps now he regrets that President Obrador did not visit Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the US House of Representatives, on his visit to Washington, already that would have helped build a good institutional relationship, ”he said.

He stressed that there is no time to lose to recognize it, since there are only a few weeks left to complete the formal change of powers, so every second counts.

“Hopefully there is no resentment from Biden for Mexico’s diplomatic blunders by not visiting Nancy Pelosi or the delayed congratulations to Biden, hopefully (the US president-elector) is a more mature character and taller than his predecessor and can build a bilateral agenda that benefits both countries, “said Torres Landa.

They welcome the probable arrival of Katherine Tai to the USTR

Iván Zapién pointed out that the probable designation of Katherine Tai as the United States trade representative would be well accepted within the American political sphere, since she is a recognized person in trade matters, as well as being young and diverse, which is why she is among the main candidates for the position.

“One of the things that the Trump administration did very well was to appoint Ambassador Robert Lighthizer to the head of the USTR, since in addition to being a person who knew about global trade, he also established good political relations with the Democrats in the Congress. So Biden has to find the same counterweight, (he has to appoint), someone who has the opportunity to work with the Republicans, ”he detailed.

“Katherine Tai is the most qualified candidate for the USTR, and I am proud to support her,” Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown, a member of the Senate Finance Committee, told Reuters.

According to the US media, there are also other candidates for the position, such as Michael Wessel, a member of the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission, and Jimmy Gomez, a Democratic member of the US House of Representatives.
