Protesters storm hospital in an attempt to ‘rescue’ patient in Mexico

About 300 people in Mexico attempted to storm a hospital Monday in pursuit of a person infected with coronavirus.

The mob was trying to forcibly remove the patient from the hospital after family members pleaded for his “rescue,” Mexico News Daily reported.

Just like a concerning number of Americans, the people in the town of Motozintla believed false information about COVID-19, in this case that it was a government conspiracy to kill people and cover it up, according to Mexico News Daily.

“Coronavirus is a lie, let’s not fall for it,” one person posted in the “Mercado Libre Motozintla” Facebook group. Far from a conspiracy theory hub, the page, which has nearly 20,000 members, usually functions as a marketplace similar to many at U.S. colleges.

Friends and family of the patient encouraged his “rescue,” Mexico News Daily reported. But the 300-deep mob could not enter the hospital, and Mexico’s National Guard was called in to secure the building.

More than 2,500 people in Mexico have died from COVID-19, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins. At least 263,000 people have died worldwide from the disease.
